2010 SpringGala

Legendary composer Stephen Sondheim turns 80 on Monday, March 22, 2010…and he has chosen to celebrate the occasion with Roundabout at our 2010 Spring Gala: Sondheim 80.

Roundabout will celebrate this incredible artist whose six decades on Broadway have changed the face of musical theatre, from such early Broadway shows as West Side Story and Gypsy, and genre-defying work in Company, Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods, to his complex later pieces like Passion and Road Show. At Roundabout’s Spring Gala, some of Broadway’s greatest artists from across the spectrum of his career will gather to pay tribute to this musical giant and perform at a very special birthday dinner.

Roundabout has a long relationship with Stephen Sondheim, having produced revivals of five of his musicals, all of which were nominated for Tony Awards®: Company (1995), Follies (2001), the Tony winner Assassins (2004), Pacific Overtures (2004), and Sunday in the Park with George (2008). In 2005, Roundabout honored Sondheim with the Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre for the indelible impact his life’s work has made on the theatre world. Earlier this year, Roundabout produced a gala concert reading of A Little Night Music, starring Natasha Richardson, Victor Garber, and Vanessa Redgrave at Studio 54.

All proceeds from the Spring Gala will benefit Roundabout Theatre Company’s Musical Theatre Fund, allowing works such as these to be revived by a new generation of artists for a new generation of audiences. Gala chairs Michael T. Cohen, Martin and Perry Granoff, and Tom and Diane Tuft will lead the fundraising effort, which will give musical theatre artists at all points in their career a home at Roundabout.

Additional details will be announced shortly, but mark your calendars and save March 22, 2010, for Sondheim 80.
