New Production Announced! SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM
Posted by Todd Haimes - October 1st, 2009

It is my pleasure to announce that our second production at Studio 54 this season will be the new original Broadway musical Sondheim on Sondheim, directed and conceived by frequent Sondheim collaborator James Lapine. The production will star Barbara Cook and Vanessa Williams.

Sondheim on Sondheim is a high-tech multimedia inside look at Stephen Sondheim’s personal life and artistic process, with exclusive interview footage. It will feature brand-new arrangements of over two dozen Sondheim songs. It is an honor to have the work of Stephen Sondheim back at Roundabout after having produced five Tony Award nominated Sondheim revivals including Company (1995), Follies (2001), Tony Award winning Assassins (2004), Pacific Overtures (2004) and Sunday in the Park with George (2008). This will directly coincide with our 2010 Spring Gala, which will celebrate Sondheim’s landmark 80th birthday with a star-studded tribute to the legendary composer.

Barbara Cook

Barbara Cook

I am excited to welcome Barbara Cook and Vanessa Williams into the Roundabout family. Barbara has been called one of the greatest interpreters of the work of Sondheim and received a Tony Award nomination for Best Theatrical Event for her solo concert Mostly Sondheim in 2002. It has been over 37 years since Barbara appeared in a Broadway musical, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome her back.

Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams

Vanessa is one of the most respected and multi-faceted performers in entertainment today. She received a 2002 Tony Award nomination for her performance of the “Witch” in Into the Woods. She currently stars on the ABC hit comedy “Ugly Betty,” for which she has been nominated for several Emmy Awards.

Sondheim on Sondheim will also feature returning Roundabout family member Michael Arden (Big River) and Broadway favorite Leslie Kritzer (A Catered Affair). The design team will include Beowulf Boritt (Sets), Susan Hilferty (Costumes), Ken Billington (Lights), Dan Moses Schreier (Sound), Peter Flaherty (Projections), and David Loud (Musical Director). The show will begin previews on Friday, March 19th with the opening night set for Thursday, April 22nd.

I truly look forward to working with this incredibly talented team and to sharing this exciting new production with all of you!

Todd

I am going to be visiting from the UK in March - and will be in NYC when previews are due to start. I really don’t want to miss out. Life-long Sondheim fan (seeing Night Music too). Choosing the show as part of a subscription won’t really work for me as it’s only a short visit. Is there any update on the release date of tickets? Or suggestions on how to make sure that I get a ticket? Thank you.
